This covers what you will need to do before starting up, and guide you through to launching and promoting your online store. Ask yourself basic questions about your store. This can help you to focus your attention and speed up your setup process.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Select a Name and Legal Structure<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You basically have 4 choices when selecting a legal structure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycompanyworks.com\/entity.htm\">Click Here<\/a>\u00a0for a detailed explanation of all 4.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sole Proprietorship (form a Sole Proprietorship Now)<\/li>\n<li>Partnership (form a Partnership now)<\/li>\n<li>Limited Liability Company (LLC) (form an LLC now)<\/li>\n<li>Corporation or S-Corporation (form a Corporation now)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong><b>Write a Business Plan<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to convince yourself that you don\u2019t need a business plan, but creating a business plan with financial projections forces you to think through details. Keep your plan a living breathing thing that you revisit and adapt regularly.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t already, prepare at least a preliminary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycompanyworks.com\/businessplan.htm\">business plan<\/a>.\u00a0Get the free Work Like A Girl Gang business template.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Obtain your Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN)<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you are setup as a Corporation, LLC or Partnership (or a sole proprietorship with employees), apply for a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) from the IRS. A FEIN will be necessary to open a bank account or process payroll.<\/p>\n<p>You can always get an EIN here.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Open the Company Bank Account<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Select a bank and open the company bank account.\u00a0This will keep your profit separated from your invoices.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Lease Office, Warehouse or Retail Space (if not home-based)<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Depending on your type of business (retail, office or warehouse), arrange for office space to be leased. Contacting a commercial realtor in your area can be helpful. Also, make sure to arrange for utilities and office furniture.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t so this part if you can fully operate your business from home. Most businesses only need a laptop and a reliable internet connection to be successful.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Obtain Licenses and Permits<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong><b>A. Federal Permits<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Depending on the type of business you are in, you may need a Federal license or permit.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Most businesses do NOT require a Federal license or permit<\/b><\/strong>. However, if you are engaged in one of the following activities, you should contact the responsible Federal agency to determine the requirements for doing business:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Investment advising (\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.sec.gov<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Drug manufacturing (\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.fda.gov<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Preparation of meat products (\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.fda.gov<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Broadcasting (\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.fcc.gov<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Ground transportation (\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dot.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.dot.gov<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Selling alcohol, tobacco or firearms (\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.atf.gov<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><b>B. State Licenses<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Some occupations and professions require a State license or permit. Laws vary from State to State, however, if you are engaged in one of the following professions, you should contact the responsible state agency to determine the requirements for your business:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>building contractors<\/li>\n<li>banks<\/li>\n<li>insurance carriers<\/li>\n<li>physicians<\/li>\n<li>appraisers<\/li>\n<li>accountants<\/li>\n<li>barbers<\/li>\n<li>real estate agents<\/li>\n<li>auctioneers<\/li>\n<li>private investigators<\/li>\n<li>private security guards<\/li>\n<li>funeral directors<\/li>\n<li>bill collectors<\/li>\n<li>cosmetologists<\/li>\n<li>truck drivers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>State Licenses and Permits based on products sold<\/b><\/strong>.<br \/>Some state licensing requirements are based on the product sold. Contact your state licensing authorities to determine the licensing requirements of your business. For example, most states require special licenses to sell:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>liquor<\/li>\n<li>lottery tickets<\/li>\n<li>gasoline<\/li>\n<li>firearms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>Sales Tax Permit<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If your company sells physical products within the state where it does business, you may have to collect and pay sales tax. This is usually accomplished by obtaining a State Seller\u2019s Permit or Resale Permit.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>Business License<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Most Cities or Counties require you to obtain a business license, even if you operate a home-based business. This is a license granting the company the authority to do business in that city\/county.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Hire Employees (if applicable)<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you intend to hire yourself or others as a full or part-time employee of your company, then you may have to register with the appropriate State Agencies or obtain Workers Compensation Insurance or Unemployment Insurance (or both).<\/p>\n<p>Or Work Like A Girl and hire 23 contract workers that later on become employees of your successful online business.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong><b>Set up an Accounting and Record-Keeping System<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Setup your Accounting and Record-keeping system and learn about the taxes your new company is responsible for paying.<\/p>\n<p>Company documents generally are required to be kept for 3 years, including: a list of all owners and addresses, copies of all formation documents, financial statements, annual reports, amendments or changes to the company. All Tax and Corporate Filings should be kept for at least 3 years.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Obtain Business Insurance<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are many types of insurance for businesses but they are usually packaged as \u201cGeneral Business Insurance\u201d or a \u201cBusiness Owner\u2019s Policy\u201d. This can cover everything from product liability to company vehicles. A decent policy can run as little as $300\/year and offers a great extra level of protection.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need this at first but always know this is something that isn\u2019t avoidable for the protection of your business.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Systemize and Organize<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Prepare the business as if someone needed to take it over and run it for you. This means have a method to process orders, pay bills, pay employees, pay taxes, maintain your permits, etc. Basically, try to make the operational aspect of the business as automated and efficient as possible so you can concentrate on growing your business.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Develop a Business Identity<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Order business cards, letterhead and promotional materials for your business. A professionally created logo can make your business look professional and established.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Get the Word Out (Marketing)<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve set-up the company for success, you need to get the word out.
